After all, they are experts.But, we know this isnt always true. Recent political events and elections across the world - especially in Europe and America - have highlighted how inaccurate expert predictions and decisions can be.Why do smart people make stupid decisions? And, how can you avoid making schwimmbadeanstal t decisions?Lets dive in.Smart people and chimpanzeesIn the most comprehensive study to date on expert predictions, Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Phillip Tetlock, gathered a large group of experts to analyze their ability to predict future events. 1During this study, Tetlock asked the experts to predict the probability of various events occurring i.e. Would the dotcom bubble burst? And then, he would analyze how their thought processes came to these conclusions.After 20 years of collecting and studying 82,361 forecasts from experts, Tetlock came to a comical conclusion. According to Tetlock, the average expert Is not much better at predicting the future than a dart-throwing chimpanzee.Tetlock suggested that most of these experts would have made better predictions if they had made random guesses.Fortunately, there were a few experts who made good predictions.These experts had a different approach to decision-making, thinking and solving problems.Instead of falling prey to a know it all attitude, they made modest predictions. But, only after analyzing a wide range of external data and information.They were comfortable with uncertainty and complexity. They were open to reviewing ideas that challenged their beliefs and assumptions.In contrast, the experts who had the most knowledge in this study were on average, the least reliable. Even after reviewing the results, they struggled to admit they were wrong.They were overconfident and held to their beliefs, regardless of any contradictory valid evidence.Theres a scientific explanation for this type of bias that we all struggle with. But, before we discuss this, I have a quick question and challenge for you to illustrate this point.Confirmation bias Im right because I believe I am.A father and son are in a car crash and are rushed to the hospital. The father dies. The boy is taken to the operating room and the surgeon says, I cant operate on this boy, because hes my son.Question How is this possible?Ill reveal the answer to this question shortly. In the meantime, lets get back to discussing why smart people make stupid decisions.There are several mental errors that affect our decision-making, but by far the most powerful is confirmation bias.Confirmation bias refers to our tendency to look for and favor evidence that confirms our pre-existing beliefs, whilst simultaneously ignoring or devaluing information that contradicts our beliefs.Theres a reason for this. We experience discomfort whenever we face ideas or information in conflict with our current beliefs.To relieve this tension and discomfort, we seek to re-confirm our existing beliefs - even if they may still be wrong.Dont believe this could happen to you?Lets get back to the question I asked you earlier. What was your answer?If you struggled to think of any reasonable answer, dont beat yourself up. Confirmation bias affected your ability to uncover the correct answer.And, in case youre wondering, the correct answer is simpl e - the surgeon is the boys mother.In hindsight this is obvious, but its possible that you unconsciously overlooked the possibility of a female surgeon. Instead, you searched for solutions to the problem that were wrong, but maintained your beliefs of the surgeon being male. 2Im sure you can now see how confirmation bias affects our decision-making abilities and may lead us to making stupid mistakes.It restricts the information we choose in making our decisions. It leads to a bias in interpreting this information and distorts our memory.This is why smart people make stupid decisions.The more knowledge you have, the more confirmation bias you will struggle with and the more likely youll reject ideas that differ from your own.Once we become close minded, we are prone to making bad decisions, even more so than a person with much less knowledge than us.Now that weve discussed this, how can you best combat your confirmation biases and avoid making bad decisions?Disprove yourselfGreat do ubts, deep wisdom. Small doubts, little wisdom. - Chinese proverbHere are two simple steps to help you avoid making bad decisions Step 1 Practice Self-Awareness.You cant change what you dont know exists. This is why being aware of your own limitations in making rational decisions is so important.Studies have shown that self-awareness exercises that encourage you to slow down and relax could also help you to improve your creativity and decision-making. 3Deliberately focusing your attention on what is important is a skill that develops with practice and patience. Its simple and powerful.Step 2 Disprove yourself.It takes courage to admit youre wrong after the fact. It takes even more courage to disprove and challenge your own assumptions before the decision.Next time youre faced with a problem or challenge, seek out all possible ideas that may contradict your current beliefs.This will prepare you to make a well-rounded good decision, instead of an irrational bad decision based solely o n your beliefs and emotions.Another variation of this type of thinking (first principles) has also been used to create innovative, breakthrough ideas. I also noticed that while everyone else goofed off or took off during the summer months, I could always pick up a lot of extra work if I chose to take advantage of the vacation vacuum. Even better, clients were more grateful and usually more generous. And heres the flipside. I could also set up my vac ation time so that fruchtwein destinations were less crowded and flights and hotels less expensive. Talk about a win-win.You play less of the blame gameWhile its great to be the one in charge, it also means that for better and worse, youre also the one that gets blamed when things go wrong. As the second or third or last in command, youre free to quietly do your job while avoiding any of the top-level fallout. This doesnt give you free reign to mess up, but it does allow you to stress less the rest of the time.You have time to update your professional toolboxAs the non-go-to person, youll probably find yourself with some free time on your hands during the day or workweek. Instead of obsessively checking your social media stream, try to zero in on some of the things that might help you further your career. While youre at it, see if your employer will foot the bill for new classes, apps or programs that will help with productivity. Want to earn some brownie points along the way and fi nd a way to pick up some more hours or hint that its time for a raise? One involved tears (of sadness), one involved tears (of happiness- though I saved them for after the meeting), and one involved my boss asking if I could take him with me. All of them, though, involved a gut-wrenching feeling that was equal parts terror, fear, and guilt (and OK, maybe a little excitement). Sound familiar? Whether youre thrilled to be leaving a job you really love, having that conversation is rarely easy. Theres plenty of advice out there on the basics of how to quit your job Break the news, express gratitude for all the opportunities youve received, and show that youre committed to transitioning your responsibilities. But lets go one step further and talk about how to make having that conversation a little less painful. Here are a few things to keep in mind Remember This Happens All th e TimeYoure not the first person whos ever quit, and you wont be the last. So, if youre scared your boss will be shocked, throw a fit, or be personally offended, take a deep breath and repeat This is a totally normal part of the working world. leid to mention, your boss might not be as blindsided as youd think after weeks of emergency dentist appointments and your Monday-morning Hey, can we chat for 15 minutes today? email. That said, youll also want to prepare for the reaction you might receive when quitting a job. It probably wont be a screaming fit (I hope), but it might be a counteroffer or a guilt trip to try to get you to stay longer than the notice youve given. If theres a reason you cant be totally open- you havent signed your offer letter, youre going to a competitor- thats OK, but give as much information as you can I cant be public about it just yet, but its a marketing position at a startup where Ill be doing highly creative social campaigns. Or, if youre quitting with nothing on the horizon- Ive done that too- something like, I have several possible options, and Im taking a few weeks off to recharge before I land. The Date of Your Last DayTwo weeks notice is the bare minimum, though if you have a high-le vel role, are in the midst of an extremely busy season or complex project, or arent easily redistributions-mixable, its worth thinking about giving a bit more. An Overview of Your Transition PlanThis, ultimately, is what your boss is worried about most What will he or she do next? You dont have to have a detailed transition plan in place (though you should get to work on that ASAP), but you should outline a few thoughts about what youll do in your remaining time. Preparing these statements and doing a dry run of the conversation will make you feel much more comfortable when youre actually having it. That, andRemember the Reasons Youre LeavingWhen youre approaching your managers office, its easy to remember all the reasons you should stay. You know the drill here, your co-workers arent that bad, and your boss really does need you at the even t next monthStop. And reflect on not only your motivations for looking for a new job in the first place, but also for deciding to make this next move- a higher-level position, work you care about, more money, less stress, all of the above. Assuming youve thought through this decision and made it with eyes wide open, its likely a great move, and youre going to feel amazing once this next step in the transition is over. Keeping that feeling in mind as you walk in will help you stay calm, positive, and energized rather than panicked. Im still in touch with all three of them. The world is small, and its common (and a really, really good thing) to maintain relationships with former co-workers. So if part of your anxiety is actually sadness that you wont be seeing these people ever y day, keep in mind that this isnt the end of the road. There are plenty of ways to stay in touch, plus you may have opportunities to collaborate in the future- or heck, even work together again. Having the talk is never easy. But, I promise Once its done, that gut-wrenching feeling is going to be replaced by a wave of relief and happiness that the next thing is just around the corner.
